Existence / Resistance

Existence / Resistance is the title of the fourth album by Rimini-born flutist Fabio Mina, released by Okum Produzioni, Turin.

Co-written with producer Manuel Volpe (Massimo Silverio, Rhabdomantic Orchestra), the album emerges from an intense exploration of the instrument and improvisation that evolves into compositions inspired by the wind—its sound, its behavior, and its interaction with space and elements.

On a deeper level, Existence / Resistance is a reflection on human freedom and our relationship with nature and society, where "resistance" becomes a daily exercise against hostile currents—an opposing and persistent wind embodied in the album by the voices of two Native American activists, who fight for their survival, featured in the tracks Terra and Ski Um Talx.

“The idea for the album’s title came from the words of Ski Um Talx, a young artist and activist of Hopi origin. In an interview, she describes how her ‘existence’ is intrinsically tied to the daily resistance her family undertakes, a concept reflected in the meaning of her name. The tone of her voice, her strength, the will to exist are the backbone of the track bearing her name. Her voice was also vital nourishment throughout the creation of this work."

The goal of EXISTENCE/RESISTANCE was to create a flute-centered album, using all its sounds, noises, and extended techniques, in dialogue with electronic tools like a sampler (which plays loops and samples created from the flute itself), pedals to manipulate the acoustic material and synthesizers.

This album is the result of two intense studio sessions, blending composition and improvisation, held in February and May 2024 at Rubedo Recordings in Turin.
